August 19, 2018
Weekday editions of Global Briefing will return from September 4.

On Today's Show

On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN:

First, Fareed gives his Take on the lasting impact of the global financial crisis.

"[T]he fact remains, no government handled the financial crisis better than that of the United States. And yet, the backlash to the bailouts has produced the most consequential result here in America. So having led the world safely out of the financial crisis, the US is now leading the world in a wave of nationalism, protectionism, and populism, that just might send everything crashing down once again."

You can also read Fareed's New York Times review of "Crashed," by Adam Tooze, here.

Next, Turkey is a NATO member and sits as an important buffer between Europe and the Middle East. So, is an unstable Turkey what the world needs right now, and are economics America's new favorite weapon? Joining Fareed to discuss this are Steven Cook, a senior fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations, Rana Foroohar, a global business columnist for the Financial Times and CNN's global economic analyst, and Stephen Moore a senior economic adviser to Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

Also on the show: This summer has seen record heat waves in North America, Europe, Asia and North Africa. Meanwhile, heat waves have been felt above the Arctic Circle. Fareed speaks with Nathaniel Rich, who recently published an in-depth look at climate change in The New York Times Magazine titled "Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change." Also joining Fareed to discuss the issue is Elizabeth Kolbert, a staff writer at the New Yorker who won a Pulitzer for her book "The Sixth Extinction."

Plus: As the world moves toward growing technological precision and perfection, are we losing something in the process? Can we still appreciate the beauty of the imperfect? Fareed speaks with Simon Winchester, author of "The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World."
