This is Brierley again—Cooking Light’s Food and Nutrition Director. Today we’re going to bust a few myths about sugar. Here’s my favorite myth: all sugar should be avoided. Not so. There are actually two major classes of sugar—natural and added. Natural sugars occur, well, naturally in food. Eating those is less of a concern, mostly because it’s hard to overdo it. What isn’t healthy—and what this challenge is all about cutting out—are added sugars. They’re literally added to foods and drinks: And you find them in some unexpected places—not just cookies and snacks, but ready-made meals, salad dressings, and salty foods, too, so be sure to read the labels!
